Custom Foot Orthotics
The feet are the body’s foundation; therefore, if any dysfunction is present, it may affect the body’s biomechanics by altering the gait; and/or add stress to the joints, including knees, hips, pelvis, and spine. This may in turn increase possible wear and tear of these joints and increase the risk of injury, whether pain is present or not.
What are custom foot orthotics?
Custom foot orthotics are medical devices used to support or correct the alignment of the feet to reduce strain and stress on your body by improving the body’s biomechanics, which may also help alleviate pain.
Frequently Asked Questions
Using a 3D scanner, we are able to quickly and safely assess the arches of our patients’ feet; where, on their feet, they bear the weight; and their symmetry from side to side. This information generates a pronation index that will tell us whether a person’s feet function the way that they are supposed to or whether they present with a mild, moderate, or severe dysfunction.
Because custom foot orthotics help improve the body’s biomechanics, they can help relieve a wide variety of aches and pains not only in your feet but also in your knees, hips, pelvis, and lower back by allowing for proper function and, therefore, decreasing unnecessary stress on these joints. Other than for general pain, custom foot orthotics are also often recommended for specific foot conditions such as arch and heel pain, bone spurs, plantar fasciitis, metatarsalgia (pain under the ball of the foot), and recurrent lower body injuries.
Everyone’s insurance coverage varies; however, custom foot orthotics are covered under most benefit plans. We recommend that you contact your insurance company directly for details. If covered, you will need a prescription from your family physician in order to be reimbursed.
